Biography
Shanna Lynn Moakler was born on March 28, 1975, in Providence, Rhode Island, to John W. Moakler III, a dentist, and Gail Moakler. She grew up spending weekends on her grandfather’s farm, where she has described herself as a tomboy, and she was a competitive roller skater for 12 years. She attended Barrington High School in Rhode Island, where she was voted best dressed, and after graduation she moved to Miami to pursue modeling, later working in New York City before settling in Los Angeles.
She began modeling at 15, appearing in magazines including Cosmopolitan and Brentwood. At 17 she represented Rhode Island in the Miss Teen USA 1992 pageant, finishing seventh overall, and won the Miss Teen All American title in 1993. In 1995 she was named Miss New York USA and finished as first runner-up at Miss USA; when winner Chelsi Smith went on to win Miss Universe, Moakler succeeded her as Miss USA in May 1995, at age 20. She later signed with Playboy and was named Playmate of the Month in December 2001.
Career
Moakler’s acting career began on television in 1996 with appearances on Due South and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. From 1998 to 2000 she was a regular on the USA Network drama Pacific Blue, playing Officer Monica Harper in seasons four and five. She went on to guest roles on shows including Joey, Entourage and CSI, and hosted E!’s Bridalplasty during its run in 2010–2011.
Her best-known television work is reality television. In 2005 she starred as herself alongside her then-husband, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, in MTV’s Meet the Barkers, which ran for two seasons until February 2006. She later competed on season three of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in 2006 (eliminated in week two), joined the cast of VH1’s Hollywood Exes in 2014, and finished seventh out of eleven on season three of Celebrity Big Brother in 2022. Like other models who built long screen careers, such as Amber Rose, Moakler has stayed in the public eye well beyond her pageant years, as has fellow reality personality Tana Mongeau.
Behind the camera, she has stayed connected to pageants: she joined the Miss Nevada USA organization as a director in 2011, has served as its executive producer since 2012, and acquired the Miss Utah USA franchise in 2018. She also launched her own cosmetics line, Smoak Cosmetics, in 2018.
Moakler has three children: daughter Atiana (born March 1999) from her relationship with boxer Oscar De La Hoya, and son Landon (born October 2003) and daughter Alabama (born December 2005) from her marriage to Barker. She and Barker married on October 30, 2004, and their divorce was finalized in 2008.
The 2026 documentary — in her own words
In August 2026, Hulu released Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear, a documentary about Barker’s life filmed over roughly nine years, in which Moakler appears. On the September 10, 2026 episode of iHeartRadio’s I Do, Part 2 podcast, she said she regretted taking part. Her words, as reported from that episode, were: “I regret a lot. Yeah, I wish I didn’t do it.” She added: “I knew in my heart I wasn’t going to be portrayed the way that I felt I deserved,” and said she was “a little disappointed with myself for participating.”
Two points of context come from Moakler herself in the same conversation. First, she has not watched the finished documentary; her reaction came from “bits and pieces” other people shared with her. Second, she drew a distinction with her earlier reality show: she does not regret making Meet the Barkers itself, saying she can still watch old footage fondly because it captures a younger version of her family, even though she disagrees with some conclusions viewers drew from it. This article reports only what she said; it does not speculate about anyone else’s motives or about relationships beyond her own statements.
Her memoir: from Queen Risen to Blink of an Eye
Moakler is self-publishing a memoir she finished writing in February 2026. She first announced it under the title Queen Risen, then announced on Instagram in August 2026 that the book is now titled Blink of an Eye. In her announcement she wrote: “Life can change, in the ‘Blink of an Eye.’ Hopefully my reality, reinvention and surviving some rough waters can make your journey a little easier… From a small child with big dreams, to co-parenting my children in today’s celeb obsessed climate… I’m self-publishing my memoir, my way.”
On the podcast she stressed the book is not about one person, saying Barker appears in only a couple of chapters. Instead, she said she wants to cover her modeling years in Miami and New York, her Miss USA years, 1990s Hollywood, the Playboy Mansion, and subjects including trauma, divorce, public humiliation and rebuilding a life after relationships end — with the aim, in her words, of inspiring women. As of October 2026, no release date for the memoir has been confirmed.
Money: no reliable net worth figure
There is no reliable published figure for Shanna Moakler’s net worth, and this article will not invent one. No credible financial publication has reported her wealth. The numbers circulating online come from biography aggregator sites that publish estimates without any stated methodology — and they disagree: most repeat a figure of around $15 million, while at least one puts her at $4 million. With a spread that wide and no workings behind any of the numbers, no single figure can be trusted.
What can be said is where her income has come from across a three-decade career: modeling contracts, acting roles, reality television (including Meet the Barkers, Dancing with the Stars and Celebrity Big Brother), pageant production work, her cosmetics line, and event and appearance work. The size of each stream is not publicly disclosed, so any total would be guesswork.
